Sept. 3 post

Wanted to get this post out there and try not to miss too much college football action on this night.

Got a lot of feedback from Thursday’s column in the paper about senior quarterback Karsten Sween.

Another person who knows what Sween is going through — to a certain extent — is senior center Russ Arnold.

In 2007 Arnold started all 12 games , including 10 at right guard and two at center for an injured Tim Bond.

It looked like Arnold would be the starter at right guard in 2008, but the coaches moved senior Kyle Howard from tackle to guard and Arnold found himself in mostly a backup role. He ended up starting one game and he played in seven.

This season Arnold is the Cowboys’ starting center.

Arnold and Sween came to UW together in the fall of 2005.

“Whether (Sween) plays or not he’s an important guy to have around,” Arnold said. “He’s a friend and he’s a leader. You don’t have to be the shining star on the field to be a leader, to have your voice heard and to have the respect of your teammates, which he certainly does.

Friday is a big day at UW with the induction of its latest Athletics Hall of Fame class. Look in Friday’s paper for an interesting story about former basketball great and current Cheyenne Central coach Mike Jackson, as well as bios on the other inductees.

Also see a story that even when the UW football team has a home game, they won’t be sleeping in their own beds the night before the game.

Less than 48 hours before the start of the season for the Pokes. It can’t get here soon enough.
