Helping where he can

University of Wyoming true freshman quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels has said numerous times he will do anything to help his team win.

He’s proven that on the field. He’s guided the Cowboys to back-to-back wins in his first two starts, including game-winning drives in the fourth quarter in both instances.

But it doesn’t end there.

About midway through Wednesday’s practice, one of the periods had players working on individual drills. The receivers were going to work on ball security where they run against some resistance (another player holding a large rubber band around them) while some one else uses a boxing glove and punches at the ball.

Only problem was the bag with the boxing gloves couldn’t be found.

Carta-Samuels wasn’t in the drill, nor any for this period, so he helped the equipment managers look for the bag .

The bag was found and all went well.

What doesn’t Carta-Samuels do?

Some notes from Wednesday’s practice:

–Senior receiver Donate Morgan is now working with the scout team and not listed on UW’s two-deep roster this week.

–True freshman linebacker Trendt Marsom was a terror on the scout team defense, espeically when the offense was working deep in its own territory.

–Senior tight end Greg Genho isn’t used much in the passing game, but he caught a couple of touchdown passes in practice that earned him some good-natured ribbing from his teammates.

–A scout from the Minnesota Vikings was at practice.

See Thursday’s paper about how UW coach Dave Christensen isn’t concerned about the predicted poor weather for Saturday’s game with New Mexico affecting the offense. Also see my column on how outside linebackers coach Mike Fanoga has used football to help him cope with tragedy that occurred thousands of miles away last week.

Also, the live blog for the UW-New Mexico game will launch at around 11 a.m. Kickoff is at noon.

  1. Kyle says:

Trendt Marsom also has families in both countries Samoa and American Samoa that was affect by the tsunami. His families barely escape to the mountain before that tsunami claims thier houses.

Like coach Fanoga, he is using football as a way of coping with it. He still can’t believe that everything is gone. He spent last Christmas and New Year in american Samoa.
