Wyoming coach Dave Christensen told members of the media Monday that he doesn’t see a weakness in the Cowboys’ next foe, No. 4 TCU.
See Tuesday’s paper for more on that.
Christensen isn’t the only one who feels that way.
Even though he was fired Monday, UNLV coach Mike Sanford said after his team’s 41-0 loss at TCU on Oct. 31 that the Horned Frogs was one of the best defensive teams he has ever seen at the college level. Sanford was UNLV’s coach for five seasons and has 23 years as a college assistant.
Sanford also had high praise for the TCU offense.
“I think this is the best offense that they’ve had (since TCU joined the Mountain West Conference in 2005) ,” he said. “They have the best combination of a good, hard, physical run game and a very efficient passing game where (quarterback) Andy Dalton is making good decision and getting the ball to some athletic guys.”
Utah was ranked 16th last week and went to TCU and lost 55-28. That prompted Utes coach Kyle Whittingham to say: “I have been a head coach for five years and that’s the best team I’ve faced.”
Whittingham is 45-16 as a head coach and still ranked in the top 25 this week. The Utes beat Alabama 31-17 in the Sugar Bowl last season to finish 13-0 and No. 2 in the nation.

Most of you probably realize this, but Christensen reminded me that all 24 points the Cowboys scored in the fourth quarter rally in last Saturday’s 30-27 win at San Diego State were by true freshmen.
Quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels had a 10-yard touchdown run, and running back Alvester Alexander had a 33-yard run. Carta-Samuels threw to tight end David Tooley from nine yards out for the game-tying score, and kicker Ian Watts booted the game-winning field goal from 43 yards.
“I had no idea that’s the way it was going to happen. Those kids have matured and rose to the occasion,” Christensen said.

One of the new things the team has done in recent weeks is have a player run onto the field prior to the game with the Wyoming state flag and one with a Special Forces flag to honor the military. UW often refers to its special teams as special forces and the player that carries that flag was the outstanding special teams player from the past week.
Christensen said junior receiver Zach Bolgerof Casper will carry the Wyoming flag this week, and senior Mitch Unrein will tote the Special Forces flag. Unrein played a big role in senior John Fletcher’s blocked field goal late in the game at San Diego State. Basically, Unrein took out his man, which created a seam for Fletcher to move in for the block.

one of the topics on radio where i live is how good is tcu. are the the best team ever in the mwc? are they better than utah in ’04? most concede they are better than last years ute team that was 13-0 and thumped alabama in the sugar bowel. fans in and around laramie are very lucky to see texas and tcu live in the same season. win or lose, this should be a treat to watch.
Was on the MWC conference call today when that topic was brought up.
That 2004 Utah team was really good. Would have been an interesting matchup with TCU.
Hope fans around here feel the same way. I will be surprised if the game draws more than 22,000. We shall see.
