UW-LMU post-game thoughts

December 5th, 2009

It wasn’t pretty, but the Cowboys fought through another poor-shooting stretch in the second half to win 76-70.

UW has done this in its last two games, but found ways to win. That’s encouraging since this team was losing those games a couple of weeks ago. See my column in Sunday’s paper for more on that.

It was good to see the Cowboys make six 3-pointers, but they only made one in the second half. Still, the 3-point shooting is getting a little better.

Sophomore point guard JayDee Luster came up huge in the final minute with two steals, a rebound and a basket. He was my MVP even though his stat line wasn’t stellar.

UW has four players score in double figures for the fourth time this season, and it is 4-0 in those games.

Could rebounding be UW’s next big issue? It was outrebounded 53-30 and 27-13 on the offensive glass. Coach Heath Schroyer said his team wanted to defend the 3-point line in this game, and LMU shot only 27.3 percent from behind the arch. But UW’s guards didn’t rebound well. You can bet that will be addressed in practice this week.

No Afam Muojeke (knee). Schroyer hopes to get him back for UW’s next game this coming Saturday in Casper against Northern Colorado, which is among the top 25 mid-major teams in the nation by one national poll.
