The perfect storm for the Mountain West occurred Sunday as a record four teams made the field of 65 for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
They included No. 3 seed New Mexico in the East Region; No. 7 BYU in the West, No. 8 UNLV in the Midwest and No. 11 San Diego State in the Midwest.
As far as first-round games, I like all the MWC teams: New Mexico to beat No. 14 Montana and BYU to beat No. 10 Florida, San Diego State to upset No. 6 Tennessee at UNLV to beat No. 9 Northern Iowa.
After that I think it will be tough for a MWC team to get to the Sweet 16. New Mexico will probably face No. 6 Marquette. A winnable game for the Lobos, but I liked how Marquette played in the Big East Tournament.
Your thoughts? And what are some of your upset picks as you look over the bracket?

Also would like to get your thoughts on what coach Heath Schroyer had to say in my article in Sunday’s paper wrapping up the UW men’s hoops season. Most I’ve talked to aren’t buying what he’s saying. Here’s the link to the story http://www.wyomingnews.com/articles/2010/03/14/sports/20sports_03-14-10.txt

Wyo fans are patient, but Monmouth and Hampton at home and Air Force by 19 in the pigtail game should be the last straw for Heath. Keep in mind Air Force is young and had injuries as well. Sure we will be better next year but so will our whole leage.
Any true Montanan would be picking The Griz over New Mexico even though we know it ain’t going to happen!!!! Saw highlights of the guard they got (Harris I think)…new school record for points in the tournament!
Who do you think will go the furthest into the tournament (haven’t looked at a bracket yet)
As a fellow Montanan it’s hard not to cheer for the Griz, but I can’t in this instance. When I was there I watched their coach, Wayne Tinkle, play for the Griz.
Anyway, I think New Mexico has the best chance to go the farthest. Like I said in the blog I like all four MWC teams to win their first-round games. It will be tough to get out of the second round, but San Diego State and New Mexico have the best chances.
RG,
Hey I think the MWC has a good chance to make some noise. NM is suited to be a thorn in the side out EAST and BYU should play well in the WEST bracket..I also think SDSU & UNLV will play better than people thnk…
By the way have you heard of any Football transfers come from Tex.Tech???
Hi Steve,
I agree with you with the MWC teams. I just got back from the MWC Tournament and trying to find the bottom of my desk. Hope to spend some time in Laramie in the coming days and will look into the Texas Tech transfers, if there are any. But I can tell you if there are any they won’t play this year (unless some special circumstances abound).
I will keep you posted. Thanks for the post.
