Wyoming wrestling coach Mark Branch has the credentials: A two-time NCAA champion at Oklahoma State and an assistant coach there where the team and several individuals won and competed for numerous national championships.
Now in his second year at UW, Branch has elevated these Cowboys to a new level. For the second straight year four wrestlers will compete a the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, which begin Thursday in Omaha, Neb.
Despite winning a NCAA West Regional/Western Wrestling Conference title earlier in the month, Branch wasn’t satisfied. In fact, he wasn’t happy. He didn’t think his guys wrestled that well.
This after UW snapped Northern Iowa’s 24-year run at the title and the Cowboys won their first conference title since 1992.
“He’s an intimidating figure, but in a good way,” UW senior 133-pounder Cory VomBaur said. “You want to wrestle well for him.”
VomBaur, along with sophomores Michael Martinez, Joe LeBlanc and Shane Onufer begin their quests for All-American status at the tournament today. For more on this story, see Thursday’s Wyoming Tribune Eagle.
