For a team that hadn’t practiced in 12 days, the Wyoming football team didn’t look that rusty Tuesday.
Sure, there were a few mistakes and the overall intensity dropped off a bit near the end. But the practice, which went nearly 2 1/2 hours, was physical and intense.
Just ask sophomore running back Alvester Alexander, who took some big hits from redshirt freshman linebacker Devyn Harris, junior linebacker Brian Hendricks and junior defensive end Gabe Knapton.
It was one of the more physical spring practices I’ve seen in quite some time that didn’t involve scrimmaging — especially after a long break.
Sophomore linebacker Ghalli Muhammad and junior defensive end Josh Biezuns had interceptions of sophomore quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels off tipped passes at the line of scrimmage.
Carta-Samuels is getting some work as the holder for sophomore kicker Ian Watts, but expect junior punter Austin McCoy to win that job.
Redshirt freshman walk-on Duell Petsch from Burns was moved from running back to receiver, but saw some snaps at running back because of a lack of numbers.
The team returns to practice Thursday with some scrimmaging. The first full scrimmage will be at 9 a.m. Saturday.
UW could be making a major switch along its offensive line. For that story, see Wednesday’s Wyoming Tribune Eagle.

Robert, how does Knapton look at DE? Do you think he can make the transition from MLB?
In the one practice I’ve seen he’s looked pretty good. He looks quick, fast and tenacious. Both he and Biezuns look good at defensive end. A lot of their transition will depend on how the guys in the middle play along the line, and in spring ball we won’t get a great indication because they are pretty thin there and not very experienced. But I do think Knapton will be fine at defensive end.
Thanks for the comment and question!
