The Wyoming men’s basketball team received a verbal commitment from 6-3 shooting guard Luke Martinez from Williston State Community College in Williston, N.D.
Martinez averaged 19.7 points per game last season, and shot 39 percent from 3-point range.
He will have two years of eligibility at UW, and is expected to enroll this fall.

Rg,
have you heard anything on the other Juco player from Cal… Donald Williams
Hi Steve,
Haven’t heard anything new on him. If no one else leaves the program, and right now I have no reason to beleive anyone will, UW’s recruiting class is full now and all of its scholarships are filled.
Schroyer is off to the Final Four like all the other coaches in the country are right now.
If I hear more or get more info on Williams I will post it.
Thanks Steve and have a good one!

How many guys can they have on a team. I count 11 returning + 4 newcomers if the reports are correct. Joe Hudson, Gibson, Martinez x 2.
that is 15, I thought the limit was 13. Are 2 players on the current roster leaving?
I beleive they can have 13 players on scholarship then a couple of walk-ons. Rob Watsabaugh and James Dean (a transfer who sat out last year) are walk-ons.
With the Martinez kid UW would have 13 players on scholarship. I have it on good authority that coach Schroyer and staff may try and sign another player. That means one of the current guys may leave, or perhpas someone has an on-going health issue (i.e. Boubacar Sylla and his foot) and that would open up another scholarship. There are a lot of ins and outs and exepctions to the rules on scholarships when it comes to all that.
Hope that answered your question. Thanks for the interest in the blog and the comment.

Rg,
I was thinking with Bobacar and his foot that we would have one more schollie to give.. I know its still up in the air, but I don’t think its going to work out… I guess we are out of the running with the guy who is friends with JayDee in Cal…
Steve,
Coaches can’t talk to me about recruits, but someone at UW told me yesterday they may sign another guy. Sylla’s foot could be an issue and I haven’t heard of anyone else leaving the program. You probably read the recruiting sites and all that like most. UW appears to be on a small forward from Antelope Valley CC in California, the same school it got Mahmaoud Diakite couple of years ago.
We shall see.
Thanks again for the comment and interest. Have a good one.

Steve, I think your talking about Angelo Chol from cal. he is a junior ths year and not available until 2011.
What about bringing a true “Cowboy” kid in to get locals back interested, and remind fans of past success (Sweat 16). Terrance Dent could be that glue to bring the team and community together. Had a nice year LCCC this year. Could eventually be a good contributor to the “TEAM”.
Local kids always help the fan base at Wyoming. I know Dent had a nice season at LCCC, and that was good to see. And even though he has famous blood lines with his father, I think it would be unfair to compare him to his dad or think he would be as good. Perhaps he is or will be, but to put that kind of pressure on a kid from the start is really tough.
I hope Terrance plays at the next level again, and I’m sure he will. I will admit I’ve never seen him play so I can’t make an accurate or fair judgement on his abilities.
Thanks for the comment!
