Back from fishing

Nothing like stream fishing for trout for a couple of weeks to recharge the batteries.

I’ve been out of the loop (along with cell phone and Internet service) for quite a while. But I came across some stories while I was gone that may be of interest to some of you that follow the Cowboys and the Mountain West Conference. You may have already seen or heard of some of these.

This first one comes from a story that WyoSports colleague Bob Hammond wrote on Adam Waddell last week. Even made the national platform on ESPN regarding the heat coach Heath Schroyer is taking. Quite interesting. http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/13354/wyoming-fans-voice-displeasure-with-coach

Saw that Wyoming lost an offensive lineman when redshirt freshman Thomas Vonachek was dismissed for a violation of team rules. Tough to miss a guy that hasn’t played a down of college football and was plagued by knee and shoulder injuries during his brief time in Laramie. Sure, the overall depth of the line takes a hit. But all in all its difficult to miss a guy that wasn’t  proven.

The biggest loss along the offensive line to me was when junior-college transfer Nick Puetz quit just after spring ball. He had taken nearly all the starting snaps at one of the guard positions during the spring, then up and quit. Those snaps would have been invaluable to a guy like senior Jack Tennant, Puetz’slikely replacement. Even though he is a senior, Tennant hasn’t played a lot of meaningful snaps for the Cowboys in his career. Tennant needs to have a solid fall camp.

MWC Football Media Day in Las Vegas starts a week from today with the announcement of the all-conference team and predicted order of finish. I will be there and will also share with you how I picked once the lists are released. Coach Dave Christensen, along with senior receiver David Leonard and junior linebacker Brian Hendricks will represent UW at the event.

Fifteen days before the start of fall camp!

UW women’s basketball coach Joe Legerski got a verbal commitment from one of the state’s top players. He continues to put a fence around the state in terms of keeping the best players here. http://www.laramieboomerang.com/articles/2010/07/20/sports/doc4c4537211016d470559862.txt
