Indiana interested in UW assistant coach

Reports are surfacing today that Indiana is interested in hiring, or has hired, Wyoming defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery to coach defensive ends.

Montgomery refused to comment Tuesday when reached by phone, but said he should know more Wednesday.

Montgomery has been UW’s defensive line coach the past two seasons for head coach Dave Christensen. He played his college football at Iowa, and also had college¬†coaching stops at North Iowa Area Community College and Northern Iowa before coming to UW.

Indiana hired former Oklahoma offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson as its head coach last month.

  1. Hoke going to Michigan! Good move by the wolverines…too bad for the MT. West though. He was doing great things down there and SDSU could have been one of the next TOP 3 in the MWC.

    • I guarantee you there are a lot of coaches in the MWC doing a happy dance that Hoke went to Michigan. Not because Hoke is a bad guy. He is a really good guy, but he’s a really good coach and was on the verge of building something pretty special there. Some good pieces are still in place.

  2. RG-Do you think SDSU will go after Leach??? Would be a great offensive system to run at SDSU with all that talent there in Southern California!

    • Reports came out not long after Hoke took the Michigan job that Rocky Long will be the next San Diego State coach.

Although Leach in San Diego sounds interesting.

  3. Hey Robert,

While what a way to start the New Year. First the Pokes lose Watts, Gary and Tooley and now they are going to lose ACS and a key coach. Is there dissent on the team? These are players that Coach Christensen brought with him. Do you think they were not a good fit?

    • Hi Richard,

I don’t think there is dissent on the team. All the players that left have different circumstances. It’s not encouraging to see, but each had their unique set of stuff going on.

If Montgomery goes to Indiana, and I’m 99 percent certain he will, he is going to the Big Ten Conference, which is a step up from the MWC even if it is Indiana.

There always is a challenge to keep kids and keep them happy at this level, and the types of kids Christensen and Co. are recruiting are no different.
