News conference news and notes

Here are some highlights from Monday’s news conference and interview session with Wyoming football coach Dave Christensen and players:

–Christensen said he should have put “or” beside the top three running backs on the depth chart because all three will get equal snaps against Weber State. Sophomore Brandon Miller was listed as the starter, followed by juniors Alvester Alexander and Ghaali Muhammad.

–Speaking of Alexander, the leading rusher each of the last two years, he had a root canal done Monday and was in a lot of pain during his interview. He said he hasn’t been able to eat much other than soup for the last four days. “My mouth is numb. I feel like I’m not talking right.” Alexander did a pretty good job of talking.

–Christensen said true freshman Daniel Sullivan will handle field goals and kickoffs, and redshirt freshman Stuart Williams will handle extra points. Just prior to the end of fall camp, Christensen said senior punter Austin McCoy would handle kickoff duties. But he said Monday Sullivan is over a nagging leg injury from early in camp, which will enable him to do both field goals and kickoffs.

–Christensen didn’t sound concerned about moving junior Luke Anderson as a backup at strong safety to starter at free safety for junior Kenny Browder, who was suspended indefinitely by Christensen Monday for a violation of team rules. Browder’s backup, senior Eric Mitchell, is suspended for the Weber State game for a violation of team rules. Christensen also said senior cornerback Tashaun Gipson, who played some at safety last season, will see time at both corner and safety against Weber State. “It’s not as drastic a change as it sounds,” Christensen said. “(Anderson) has practiced and played with the (No. 1 defense) probably 50 percent of the snaps during camp. I don’t think it’s a big issue.”

–There is no new injury news. Sophomore tight end Spencer Bruce is out but Christensen is hopeful he will return this season. Out for the season are LB Oliver Schober, DT Patrick Mertens and RB Nehemie Kankolongo, which the team has known about for weeks.

–Team captains will be chosen on a weekly basis by the coaches, and this week’s captains are senior linebacker Brian Hendricks and junior center Nick Carlson.

  1. Loved your poll question. We’re young and any of thoses guesses could happen. The real question is how much better will we be at the end of the year despite the win loss columns. If we come out of the gate quickly with 2 or 3 wins coaching up will be easier than if were 1 & 4 going into mid season. Lets hope all goes well the next two weeks. I think we win by 10 so I couldn’t vote LOL
