UW-Colorado postgame thoughts

“It had the feel of a Mountain West road game.”

That’s what Wyoming men’s basketball coach Larry Shyatt said of the atmosphere his team faced at Colorado Friday night.

It wasn’t the typical Mountain West road game outcome for the Cowboys as they won 65-54 to snap a 23-game road losing streak dating back to February 2009 when they won at Air Force.

Once again, UW played good defense, especially in the second half as it allowed Colorado to shoot only 33.3 percent. The Buffs made only eight field goals in the half, and only scored 10 points the three-quarters through the half.

Senior center Adam Waddell had his best game since probably the 22-point, 13-rebound effort at home against Utah in 2010. All of his 17 points came in the second half. He made 7 of 9 free throws and he scored seven straight points midway though the second half that helped UW take this game over.

Junior forward Leonard Washington also was impressive with 16 points and seven rebounds. Shyatt said Wadell and Washington inside was huge for this team. He’s right.

And I almost missed it, but junior guard Luke Martinez had a career-high five steals — all in the second half. His three 3-pointers in the first half (he finished with four) kept UW in the game after it trailed 7-0 just over two minutes into the contest.

UW has won seven straight games, its longest steak since it won nine in a row in the 2002-03 season.

Without a doubt, this was the team’s most impressive victory of the season.

  1. Congrats to Coach Shyatt and the Cowboys. Just a couple of more wins and i will consider this season a success from what it has been the past few years. Can they write their own script? They have done it so far. This is a Shyatt team. The BS about it’s with Shroyer’s players is indeed just BS.. Adam Waddel was not gassed at the end of the game….that Shyatt’s doing! If they can will a couple of conference games on the road and 4 or so at home, i think that Coach Shyatt has will have gone along way to righting the ship and will start a solid foundation for the futrue of Cowboy basketball. The Fball economics are driving the ship of MMC survival with the MWC-CUSA possible merger. A benefit of that is the new conference could be the 3 or 4 best Bball conference in the country. Go Pokes, down a diffferent road.

  2. Great Win is right……….

What a scrappy team………..they moved, they hustled. Most of all, they smiled and looked like they had fun.

This will be a fun team to watch this year. They will win some games this year, they arn’t expected to.

Will have to find a way to make the 300 mile trip (One way) to see this team. It will be worth the trip. Hope the students and those living in and close to Laramie get out to support this team.

  3. Finally a concept of TEAM I mean TEAM basketball. Hard nose defense. A little zone mixed in with a little man on man. How about all the screens set on offense, probally more set in this game then half the season last year. Didn’t see coach up there screaming all game long trying to be the show.People in the state and the students, we got our team back we need to support them as much as we can, they deserve it.Lets make the AA a tuff place to come and play again.Boy would’nt I love to live in laramie right now.Great job coaches and players.

  4. We have potential for a really good inside out game. Any idea why Afam didn’t play? Watching game on Internet is brutal. Listen to audio to have game in real time, but watch video to see the boys. Can’t wait to see them live in Laramie against sheep

  5. Talked to Kenny Sailors last night, and he is convinced that this team can win the conference. He also thinks that Washington is one of the best bball players he has ever seen. Usually Kenny is pretty tight when giving out compliments, so this team could certainly be the surprise of the MWC this year.

  6. It was a good win we’ve kinda owned CU in hoops. I think Shyatt is a great coach. Why does n’t Marshall get playing time. I think they can finish in the top 4 if desmar had stayed they could ‘ve won the conference. Shyatt is turning things around. Afam won’t be what he was with all the knee problems. Washington and Waddle are good have to stay out of foul trouble kinda thin on backups with ajayi leaving. If they get 14 or 15 wins before conference starts that should get fans back to the AA. Get Marshall in the game coach.

    • Plan was to redshirt Marshall. He’s just not ready yet for this level. Hope he can get ready fast. They could use him.
