QB, LB commit to UW football

It appears that Wyoming found its quarterback for its 2012 recruiting class.

Jason Thompson, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound dual-threat guy from Kennedy High in Renton, Wash., has verbally committed. He was committed to Washington to play safety, but Thompson wanted to play quarterback and Wyoming looks to give him a chance.

I don’t think Thompson will replace Mountain West Freshman of the Year Brett Smith as the starter. But it sounds like UW is getting a good athlete to get into the mix at that position. And, if things don’t work out at QB, Thompson always could move to safety, right?

UW also got a verbal commitment from linebacker Lucas Wacha from Pleasant Grove High in Texarkana, Texas. If this name sounds familiar, Wacha reportedly committed to UW back in December. However, a fan chat site blew up with a thread that UW wasn’t going to offer him a scholarship. Whatever happened must not have been that big a deal as Wacha committed over the weekend.

My list has UW with 17 verbal commitments and three mid-year signees. My list also has a grayshirt recruit, but I’m not counting him since he won’t go on scholarship until Jan. 2013.

UW should be able to get a couple of more kids in this class. Would like to see another receiver and a defensive back. UW lost a verbal commitment in CB Jayshawn Jordan out of Seattle, who changed his mind and committed to Idaho. I wouldn’t be shocked if Jordan changes his mind again prior to Wednesday’s signing day.

Here is my updated list for UW’s 2012 recruiting class:

  1. Wrong! They have to be careful. Play this guy, in practice, at QB throughout a redshirt season Smith becomes a Jr, when this guy becomes a redshirt freshman. back up QB. Don’t get caught promising everything and delivering nothing. You don’t suggest anything about QB until someone other than Smith beats him out. If that were to happen he’ll ask to be moved.

Here is my great idea for the year. One gray shirt scholarship to the Wyoming “walk on” native that makes the team. (sort of the 12th Poke”) That gives the coach only 81 scholarships for division 1 scholarships but we no longer face TCU, BSU, Utah and BYU in the same season. It shouldn’t be a killer and would spark interest among Wyoming Kids even if it didn’t produce many contributors. It would be sort of a RUDY story for Wyoming. Think of the future native fan base coming back to Laramie for games talking about the semester they had their head handed to them on a plate. What do you think?

  2. Am I missing something or are there zero commits from Colorado so far? If we do not sign anyone from Colorado, am I wrong to be concerned if we lose our foothold there?

    • Let’s just hope that the recruits DC and staff have committed are better than what is available in CO…? What is the chance of picking up that other big receiver out of Washington that visited this last weekend? Also looks like we might sign two QBs?

      • Sounds to me they are hoping to get another WR in this class, and it appear UW got another verbal from a QB in Tommy Thornton out of AZ, but who started in prep careeer in Colo.

  3. RG,

So Jordan Roberts must be out of the picture for UW? Any word on where he is headed?

  4. Any word on Jordon Pulu following his friends over to Wyoming? i know he has a lot of interest.

    • No word on him. Thought I saw somewhere he was going to Eastern Washington with his brother. Could be a guy UW is still working on.
