UW-UNLV postgame thoughts

A horrible first half and a good second half.

That summed up Wyoming’s effort in a 56-48 loss to No. 20 UNLV Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the MW Tournament here at the Thomas & Mack Center.

UW made only three field goals and shot 12.5 percent in the first half. That was as poor as I’ve seen the team play offensively this season. UNLV played well defensively, but UW just didn’t have it.

The second half was better, but before it did UW trailed by 22. The lead was cut to six with under a minute to play. It could have been cut more but UW couldn’t capitalize on some chances.

It was weird to see all six UW seniors come out for the post-game news conference. It was like this was its last game. The Cowboys will play in either the NIT, CBI or CIT, and speculation is it will be the NIT. We will know Sunday night.

Mike Moser was a man among boys in the first half for UNLV with 18 points and eight rebounds. Wow! Just four points in the second half, but a 12-foot bank shot with just under three minutes to play gave the Rebels a 50-39 lead.

The top four seeds in the men’s tournament advanced to the semis. Those four (San Diego State, New Mexico, UNLV and Colorado State) will make the NCAA Tournament. What will it be for UW?

I will say NIT, but it will start with a road game.

  1. The ticket office needs to review how it will handle tickets in the future, they would only sell to cjc members and season ticket holders thus scattering the wyo fans throughout the arena that were forced to buy through unlv. So the result was wyo flat didn’t have a grouping of people in the Thomas and Mack our fan support looked pathetic because of it when there was a respectful amount of fans there, I understand the desire to reward those individuals that donate or purchase season tickets but sole access to tickets for an out of town event probably not the best idea when we struggle to get our fan base out as it is. Give em a coat jacket hat something and let the tickets be first come first serve so we don’t look so bad come on we can do better admin!

  2. Cannot expect to win with such a pathetic first half.. Never had I seen such a poor first half. Poor shot selection. It seemed to me that the Cowboys came out playing MAD. Did the coaches feelings over-lap to the players? Washington getting into early and silly foul trouble really hurt. Not much else to say just very dissappointed. Hope the Cowgirls play a better game.

    • Personal prediction feel fall short, but not by expectation- by player performance and preparation. These games are won before the game starts, coaching and game plan should have been much better. This one was on the Coach, 1st time that I will say that. Granted, the players play the game. Yet, Shyatt and Company have seen this team plenty of recent. Ripe for the picking and once again one and done at the tournament. Glad I didn’t go, was there last year and the best thing in the tournament was Jimmer. He’s not there this year….we’ll see how Pokes perform in post season play. They deserved better.
