UW football practices indoors

Wyoming practiced in its indoor practice facility Tuesday morning, but it wasn’t because the weather outside in Laramie was bad.

The weather forecast for the Cowboys’ game at Texas State Saturday night in San Marcos, Texas, is for temperatures in the high 70s to low to mid-80s by kickoff time (5 p.m. MT). There is a 60 percent chance of rain, and the humidity levels will be in the 60 percent range.

“We tried to get the heat turned up in here a little bit and get acclimated to the temperature,” coach Dave Christensen said. “We can’t make it 75 in here, but it was good. They got a good sweat going.”

Some other news and notes from practice:

— Senior defensive tackle Justin Bernthaler was not at practice because of the flu. Christensen said he passed out in the training room prior to practice. Last week, junior starting outside linebacker Mark Nzeocha battled the flu, but he played and started at Air Force. Nzeocha had an interception of junior starting quarterback Brett Smith during practice.

— Senior nose tackle Patrick Mertens wore a red, no-contact jersey. He was hurt late in the Air Force game. However, Mertens is expected to start and play at Texas State.

— Junior receiver Josh Smith is back on the team. Smith left the team after spring drills, but came back last week. The walk-on from Manchester, N.H., worked with the scout team Tuesday and has not caught a pas in his career. Smith started his career as a quarterback.

— Former UW offensive tackle Adam Goldberg (1999-2002) will be the sideline reporter for some of the Cowboys’ games later this fall. Goldberg was at the Air Force game. He played for the Minnesota Vikings from 2003-06 and the St. Louis Rams from 2006-11).

— UW will face a Dennis Franchione-coached team for the fourth time Saturday at Texas State. The Cowboys also faced Franchione when he was the coach at New Mexico, TCU and Texas A&M.

— Redshirt freshman receiver Tanner Simpson made a nice one-handed catch on a deep ball thrown by senior quarterback Colby Kirkegaard. Both players were on the offensive scout team. Kirkegaard also threw a nice deep pass for a touchdown to senior receiver Jarrod Darden earlier in practice.

— There were five NFL scouts at practice, including ones that represented the Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings.
