UW-New Mexico quotes

Here are some quotes that didn’t make it to the print or online platforms this week for Saturday’s Wyoming-New Mexico football game in Laramie:

— “We’ve faced other bigger backs, but he brings it. He might be undersized, but he cuts hard, falls forward, is physical and can juke you. You have to strap it on when you play against him.” — UW sophomore defensive end Eddie Yarbrough on New Mexico senior running back Kasey Carrier, who is ninth in the nation with an average of 137 yards per game.

— “We are tired of hearing it, but numbers don’t lie. We want to improve the numbers on our side of the ball so we can prove to other people (we are better) and stop hearing it. This is a good opportunity for all of us. We’ve got to go out and execute the best we can no matter what everyone says.” — UW junior safety Darrenn White on the Cowboys’ rushing defense that allows 236.2 yards per game.

— “Numbers are always skewed. We lead the nation in rushing, but probably are dead-last in passing. We better have some rushing yards. When it comes to Wyoming’s run defense, that is deceiving, too. Everything goes out the window when you play us, kind of like playing Air Force. We have not even talked about that as an offensive staff.” — New Mexico coach Bob Davie on UW’s run defense.

— “We’re confident, but we know (Wyoming) is a good team. For us to have success, we need to come out and play an all-around game.” — Carrier.

— “He can get the ball out as quick as any guy I’ve seen. He’s a little unorthodox, a little unconventional, but he has an unbelievably quick and accurate release.” — Davie on UW junior quarterback Brett Smith.

— “It’s been weird. I can’t wait to play in front of our fans again with the setting of homecoming.” — Smith on playing at home for the first time in a month.

— “They’re much improved. They are more of a three-man front this year compared to a four-man front last year. They are more sound in the secondary. It looks like they have better guys playing for them this year.” — UW coach Dave Christensen on New Mexico’s defense.
