Thoughts of UW football depth chart entering fall camp

Wyoming released its football depth chart prior to the start of fall camp, which begins Monday.

There wasn’t much change from this depth chart compared to the one that was released in April after spring drills.

Dominic Rufran

Dominic Rufran

Senior receiver Dominic Rufran was listed in the most updated depth chart as the starter at one of the two receiver spots. Rufran missed spring drills recovering from a broken foot suffered during winter workouts, and was not listed on the depth chart coming out of spring. But as the team’s leading returning receiver, and with a chance to be among the top five all-time at UW in catches, receiving yards and touchdowns with a solid season in 2014, it is no surprise Rufran is a starter.

There is only one fullback listed in redshirt freshman Drew Van Maanen. Sophomore Brandon Lukenbill, a walk-on, did not return after school ended in May. First-year coach Craig Bohl said some true freshmen walk-ons will get looks at full back in fall camp.

Speaking of true freshmen, none of those guys that came in this summer are listed on the latest depth chart. How many will make it into the two-deep by the time UW hosts Montana Aug. 30  will be interesting.

Two other positions could see some true freshmen emerge: tight end and defensive secondary.

Senior J.D. Krill is listed as the starting tight end. The highly-touted junior college transfer did little to nothing last season for the Cowboys. Junior college transfer Jacob Hollister — a sophomore — and converted receiver Eric Nzeocha — also a sophomore — are listed in that order behind Krill. Bohl said UW will take a good look at the true freshmen tight ends in camp: Brinkley Jolley (6-5, 265), Grant Lewis (6-5, 225) and Tyree Mayfield 6-3, 233).

Senior Darrenn White and sophomore Xavier Lewis are the only players listed at free safety. Chavez Pownell Jr. (5-11, 192) is one of three players UW signed from Florida and is listed at a safety. He could push for playing time at free or strong safety.

Two other Florida true freshmen — C.J. Jennings (5-10, 180) and Robert Priester (5-9, 168) also could push for time at cornerback during camp. As could true freshman Ryon’e Winters (6-0, 180) from Missouri.

Three positions on defense are listed as “or” in terms of the starter, which was the case coming out of spring — middle linebacker, weak-side linebacker and nose tackle. It does not matter who starts at any of these three spots as long as both can play. Depth is horribly thin across the board on this team, but especially on defense. UW has to establish more depth during camp so don’t look too much into that in terms as true “position battles.”

UW also lists no one as its kickoff returners. That will be ironed out during fall camp.

There is not any new position changes on the new depth chart, but there are two number changes. Senior quarterback Sam Stratton and senior receiver Jalen Claiborne swapped numbers. Stratton is now wearing No. 1 and Claiborne No. 9.

Below is the complete depth chart heading into fall camp. Would love to hear your thoughts, opinions and concerns.

  1. It’s going to be a long, long year. We are wafer thin at key spots. Hopeful but realistic.
