Wyoming held its Tuesday morning practice at the North 40 practice fields, and third-year coach Craig Bohl wasn’t happy that UW’s facilities crew watered the grass fields prior to practice, which created a lot of slipping and mis-timing in certain instances.
Here’s what Bohl told the media after practice.
Bohl said redshirt freshman outside linebacker Logan Wilson of Casper, who is the probably starter on the weak side, had an interception return for a touchdown during practice. So did redshirt freshman linebacker Jaylon Watson. Seems like UW’s defense picked up where it left off after its first scrimmage of camp last Saturday as the defense forced three turnovers, and returned two for touchdowns.
Junior running back Brian Hill had only two carries for three yards in last Saturday’s scrimmage. Hill gets a good amount of work during camp, but Bohl also knows Hill doesn’t need all the reps to get ready for the season. However, Bohl was asked if he was worried that Hill will have to shake off some rust when the Cowboys host Northern Illinois in the season-opener Sept. 3.
“It’s a double-edge sword,” Bohl said. Brian is a competitive guy, and he whines and complains when we keep him out of things. But, we’re also trying to find our backups. We’re pleased where Brian is at. It’s easier to say whoa than giddy up in this case.”
Redshirt freshman defensive tackle Youhanna Ghaifan is listed at 6-foot-4 and 290 pounds, and figures to be in the rotation this season. Ghaifan went to high school at Central Catholic in Grand Island, Nebraska, but is originally from Sudan, where he played a lot of soccer. Bohl likes Ghaifan’s footwork and explosion off the ball, but the youngster is still working on some things.
“He plays hard four plays and then take two plays off,” Bohl said. “Those two plays will get you beat, but that’s part of the maturation process.”
A scout from the Pittsburgh Steelers was at Tuesday morning’s practice. Late Monday night, the Indianapolis Colts signed former UW wide receiver Justin Berger.
