And, here are some comments I received from fans via my Twitter account @rpgagliardi on the new logo:

– ”I’ll stick with my previous statement….meh….It really doesn’t do anything for me either way, just meh.” — @kfbcsportszone

–”I actually like the video. … let me restate that.. I like the video except they show SDSU in almost every clip it seems like.” — @AndrewJonnides

–”Horrible.” — @wyosooner

–”Did they not learn from our attempt to change logos? They just dont want us talking about the PAC-12 tv deal and how ours blows.” — @Abercich

–”Hope that isn’t serious. That logo belongs on Nickelodeon!” — @RyanLeeFreeman

–”Just glad it’s not a picture of Pistol Pete being shot in the head by a grinning MWC referee with a wad of cash in his pocket. — @WyoTailgater

–Horrendous — @TracyRingolsby

–Not a fan of the logo… and is that purple, or blue? — @BadWillHunting

–Logo is lame! 1986 generic! Looks like a graphic on an atari game! — @brandttobler

MWC unveils new logo

Posted on June 6, 2011 by rgagliardi

Here is the Mountain West’s new logo, which the league introduced during about a 20-minute news conference Monday from San Diego.

Got to say it’s pretty ordinary. An “M” and and a “W” together? MWC Commissioner Craig Thompson said it was “bold and strong and has a simple look.”

That may be the understatement of the year so far.

I will give the MWC credit, it’s didn’t produce something with numbers in it like the Big Ten, or Pac-12. It also didn’t list its teams, since that will be changing this year and next year.

There sure was a lot of hype leading up to this, and all it produced was a logo. I guess after 12 years a change was warranted. But other than a new logo, there wasn’t any new news on BCS access, television revenue/contracts or bowl ties.

Just a logo.

I talked to Thompson about three hours after the news conference. As far as TV stuff, Thompson said there are no new talks with other TV networks about a new contract. He said there are continued talks with current partners Comcast and CBS (owners of Versus, CBS Sports Network and The Mtn.) about how to best serve the league. With eight teams in the MWC in 2011-12, each school will make about $1.5 million in TV revenue alone.

Thompson said what Boise State and TCU do this year will count toward the MWC’s potential access into the BCS since both are in the league in 2011. What Utah and BYU did in the past won’t count. According to some BCS rules the MWC could gain BCS access after the latest cycle ends after the 2011 season. But Thompson said there is no “blueprint” for this and it also depends on how other teams in other BCS conferences perform.

So what do you think of the new ? Are you chomping at the bit to run and get your new MWC gear with the new logo starting July 1? Does this really change the vision and brand of the MWC?
