If there is such a thing as a ho-hum 52-point victory, UW’s 123-71 win over Division II Adams State was just that.
But it was good to see the Cowboys win, but also hit some outside shots. Sure, it was against inferior competition, but for how much this team struggles from the perimeter it’s always good to see it hit some shots. See Sunday’s paper and my column for more on that.
Sophomore guard A.J. Davis continues to impress. He was far and away the best player for UW in its 85-76 loss to Akron Wednesday, and he was arguably the best again today with a career-high 26. Early on when most of the other players seemed disinterested in playing, Davis was sharp with 17 of his points in the first half.
“I thought for the first 16 minutes we out played them,” Adams State coach Mark Murdock said. “But they got on a run the last four minutes of the half and really broke us.”
UW went on a 9-1 run over the final 1:53 of the half and led 53-36 at the break.
Everyone played and everyone had moments where they looked good. Even walk on Rob Watsabaugh got in and scored six points.
One concern for UW has to be with sophomore captain and point guard JayDee Luster. He didn’t start but played 16 minutes. He finished with zero points and four assists. Luster missed the Akron game with a sprained ankle, and is still dealing with a shoulder injury.
His confidence seems shaken, but he is expected to start Wednesday against CSU in the start of conference play.
Three of the Cowboys’ first four conference games are at home. It will be cruicial to do well in that stretch, and it starts with CSU. The Rams are 0-5 in true road games, but 2-0 on neutral courts.
