Let the Border War hype begin

November 22nd, 2009

It’s Border War week, and anyone familiar with Wyoming or Colorado State knows what that’s all about.

There may be longer-standing rivalries out there, but this one is special in a lot of ways.

Will be curious to see what the poll results garner this week on the blog.

More importantly, I would like to hear from you — UW and CSU fans — what some of your favorite Border War memories are. Whether you played in the rivalry in any sport, or watched as a fan, I want to hear what you’ve got. I will have a few later in the week, along with what some of the current UW players said.

I think it will be fun to swap Border War stories let’s have some fun with this.

Wyoming coach Dave Christensen usually holds his weekly news conference on Monday, but because the CSU game is Friday everything got bumped up a day so he and players met with the media Sunday.

Good news on the injury front as sophomore inside linebacker Brian Hendricks is expected to start and play. He’s missed the last two games with an ankle injury. Hendricks is arguably one of the Cowboys’ best defenders.

Hendricks has some deep-seeded Border War ties. His father and grandfather both played football at CSU. Hendricks was offered a scholarship by CSU but turned it down to come to Wyoming.

Also on the injury front, sophomore nose guard Alex Stover (groin) is expected to play.

Beating your rival, getting to six wins and getting bowl eligible (if  UW gets to six wins it will go to a bowl game) are what’s at stake for UW in this game.

You wouldn’t figure Christensen will a Knute Rockne-type talk to his players to get them fired up.

But what about getting too fired up? Christensen isn’t worried about that, either.

“We’re going to get them pretty emotional before the game,” he said. “That will all calm down after a couple of plays. I want them high as a kite. I want them exited to play. I want them to understand everything that they’re playing for. We’re going to make sure they are.”

“It’s sickening.”

That’s how CSU junior running back John Mosure described losing at previously winless New Mexico Saturday night. CSU lost 29-27 to secure a last-place finish in the Mountain West standings.

CSU senior starting quarterback Grant Stucker was injured his chest in the second quarter and didn’t return. His status for Friday is uncertain.

TCU remained No. 4 in the BCS standings after its 45-10 win at UW.

The Horned Frogs are good, really good.

Another example: They didn’t commit a single penalty against the Cowboys.

Also, when Christensen pulled true freshman Austyn Carta-Samuels in the third quarter down 38-10 it wasn’t because Carta-Samuels was hurt. He didn’t want him to get hurt since the game was out of hand.

See Monday’s paper for more on the Border War, as well as throughout the week with some pretty interesting features and angles to this year’s game. I will be live blogging from the game, as well as my live blogging debut for men’s basketball Wednesday at Denver.
