Some Wednesday news and notes

It’s that time of year where postings on the blog slow down, but here are few news and notes:

–I will be at spring football practice today in Laramie, at least the first 30 minutes UW allows us to watch. Today is the first practice in full pads and fourth of 15 overall this spring. Will report back later on any big happenings. The first scrimmage of spring is set for a week from today.

–Unfortunate to see true freshman forward Tyrone Marshall will transfer at the end of the semester from the UW men’s basketball team. It’s not unexpected after a posting on his Twitter account a couple of weeks ago all but indicated he would. Hard to miss someone that didn’t do much this season. Marshall played in just nine games and averaged less than a point and a rebound per game. He was raw and athletic, but a lot of seasoning needed to be done. This leaves coach Larry Shyatt with three scholarships in the spring signing season. He needs to find some size.

UW-Washington State postgame thoughts

Kind of thought the lead to my story in Tuesday’s paper said it all about this one:

A memorable season had a forgettable ending for the University of Wyoming men’s basketball team.

That ending was a 61-41 loss to Washington State here at Beasley Coliseum Monday night in a second-round CBI game.

UW-Washington State pregame

Comments Off

I’m high above here at Beasely Coliseum in Pullman, Wash., less than an hour before Wyoming and Washington State play in a second-round CBI game.

There is some pregame news.

First, I’ve been told if Wyoming wins tonight it will play at the winner of tonight’s Oregon State-TCU game Wednesday. That game is in Corvallis, Ore. Yes, even if TCU wins, UW goes back to Fort Worth for a second time this season. Was told TCU outbid UW for that game.

Heard the CBI folks like a possible TCU-Pitt match-up in the finals with TCU going to the Big 12 next year and Pitt in the Big East.

UW-Washington St. key to the game

May be stating the obvious, but here is my key to the game for Wyoming in tonight’s second-round CBI game at Washington State.

Better defense: Wyoming must get back to the way it played defense most of the season. In its last game against North Dakota State last Wednesday the Cowboys allowed a season-high 78 points. It must do a better job across the board if it hopes to win tonight.

UW-Washington State Q&A

Comments Off

Christian Caple covers Washington State sports for the Spokesman Review newspaper in Spokane, Wash. He answered five questions I had for him about Monday’s CBI second-round game between Wyoming and Washington State, and I answered five questions for him. First are his answers to my questions, followed by my answers to his questions.

Here are my questions for you. I answered yours below.

Seemed like Washington State played well in its first-round CBI win at San Francisco. Is the team excited to play in the CBI and what did it do well at San Francisco to win? Hard to say if they’re necessarily excited, but they’re certainly focused. Coach Ken Bone has been pleased with the effort they’ve brought to practice, noting that it could have been easy for them to lament the fact that they’re missing their spring break and spending it practicing, instead. But if any of the players are thinking that, they’re not showing it. They looked a lot looser against San Francisco – shared the ball, shot well, made free throws. The Dons trap a lot in the halfcourt, and WSU has played pretty well against teams that do that this season. They dissected USF’s defense with great efficiency, and assisted on 20 of their 29 made field goals.

UW-North Dakota State postgame thoughts

Of all the things I thought I might see from the Wyoming men’s basketball team in Wednesday’s first-round CBI game with North Dakota State, I didn’t think one of them would be the Cowboys giving up 75 points.

Fortunately, UW scored 78 and won the game to advance to the second round where it plays at Washington State at 8 p.m. Monday night.

I thought junior forward Leonard Washington was a beast, once again. He had his fourth double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. His three-point play with 18.5 seconds to play gave UW a 75-70 lead.

More on Washington later this week in the Wyoming Tribune Eagle and Laramie Boomerang.

UW-North Dakota State pregame notes

Here are a couple of tidbits leading up to tonight’s CBI first-round game between Wyoming and North Dakota State.

–North Dakota State coach Saul Phillips knows first hand how good UW junior forward Leonard Washington is. When Washington was a freshman at USC in the 2008-09 season, he and the Trojans beat North Dakota State 61-57 in Los Angeles, and Washington scored 17 points. That was a season-high for him. Washington has posted double-doubles in three of the last four games for the Cowboys.

UW-North Dakota State key to the game

My No. 1 key to the game for Wyoming in tonight’s CBI first-round game with North Dakota State is ….

Effort level: Often times effort is what determines who wins tournament games. Effort hasn’t been an issue for Wyoming this season. If the Cowboys show that kind of effort tonight it will go a long way toward them winning and advancing.

I always enjoy hearing yours, so let me know. For more on tonight’s game, see today’s Wyoming Tribune Eagle and Laramie Boomerang.
