UW football coaching search update

As the second day of Wyoming’s search for a new football coach concludes, one person seems to be emerging as a solid candidate.

Former California coach Jeff Tedford.

Sources tell me that UW has made contact with Tedford, 52, and at least initially there is some interest from him.

Tedford coached Cal fro 2002-12, and is the school’s record-holder for most wins with 82. He was 82-57 there and 5-3 in bowl games. His 2006 team won the Pac-10 title. Tedford also was the offensive coordinator at Oregon before landing the head job at Cal. He also coached at Fresno State and the in the Canadian Football League.

Former Kansas coach Mark Mangino’s name is gaining momentum among fans right now. He is an assistant coach at Youngstown State and has said he wants to get back to being a head coach.

Two names that appear to be out of the running is North Dakota State coach Craig Bohl and Colorado School of Mines coach Bob Stitt.

Still early in the process, but it appears the leader in the clubhouse is Tedford.

What do you think, folks? Would this be a good hire for UW if it comes to to that?
