UW sports live chat replay

Here’s the replay from my weekly live chat on University of Wyoming sports on Thursday, Sept. 8.

Lots of good questions and dialogue from Wyoming’s season-opening 40-34 triple-overtime win over Northern Illinois last week, as well as some UW hoops news as Pine Bluffs’ Hunter Thompson committed to play for the Pokes earlier this week.

I will live chat from the UW-Nebraska football game Saturday, starting at 9:45 a.m. from Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Neb. Links to the chat will be at wyosoprts.net and this blog.

UW defensive ends didn’t all start their careers there

One of the more surprising aspects of Wyoming’s depth chart for its season-opener Saturday against Northern Illinois was redshirt freshman walk-on Josiah Hall as the starter ahead of sophomore Kevin Prosser.

Josiah Hall

Josiah Hall

However, don’t look too much into that because both will play Saturday, and throughout the season. Hall gives UW a little more size at 237 pounds, compared to 215 for Prosser.

But what’s intriguing about those two and most of UW’s defensive ends is that hardly any of them started their football careers as defensive ends.

Hall and Prosser were linebackers in high school. Same can be said about UW’s other starter, sophomore Carl Granderson. The 6-foot-5, 243-pounder was an outside linebacker who didn’t play with his hand in the dirt like he does at UW. Granderson also played some at wide receiver in high school.

Cowboys conclude fall camp with scrimmage

Third-year Wyoming football coach Craig Bohl had a lot of good things to say about Saturday’s final scrimmage of fall camp. However, no statistics or score were kept as there was not much full contact and UW’s top offensive and defensive units went up against the scout team.

But a few highlights included:

Josh Allen

Josh Allen

–Redshirt sophomore quarterback Josh Allen threw touchdown passes of 42 and 16 yards to senior wide receiver Tanner Gentry.

–Junior cornerback Rico Gafford returned two interceptions for a touchdown.

–Senior middle linebacker Lucas Wacha returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown.

UW fall camp – practice No. 23

Wyoming practiced for about two hours Friday morning in War Memorial Stadium, its final tune-up before camp ends Saturday with a scrimmage, which starts around 10:30 a.m. Just a reminder that the scrimmage is closed to the public and media so there will be no live updates.

Some of the early drill work Friday involved tackling. Not live tackling, but with tire-shaped figures.  Check some of that out here.

UW fall camp – practice No. 21

Wyoming practiced Thursday morning in War Memorial Stadium, and the weather had a fall-feel as it was a little chilly and breezy.

Third-year coach Craig Bohl the practice, which lasted a little over two hours, was “work-man like. At this point in camp, UW also is installing some of its game play for its opener Sept. 3 against Northern Illinois. Bohl moved Wednesday afternoon’s practice to evening so some of the players can get used to playing under the lights. Such will be the case in the opener.

Here are some highlights from practice.

UW fall camp – practice No. 20

Wyoming practiced once Wednesday for about 1 hour and 10 minutes in War Memorial Stadium. That was planned by coach Craig Bohl, who said the team would lift weights and do some mental work in the afternoon.

UW’s final two-a-day session of fall camp is Thursday. It’s pattern for this was to go with a lighter practice in the morning, and a heavier one in the afternoon. However, Bohl said he will flip-flop that Thursday since Wednesday was a lighter day on the field.

Here are some highlights from the early portions of Wednesday’s practice.

40-yard dash with UW starting quarterback Josh Allen

Today is the debut of a season-long video series called 40-yard dash.

I recently had several Wyoming football players meet me at the 40-yard line at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie. I asked them questions until we got to the end zone.

Hoping to have a little fun with this, and from the looks of it, the players did. Would love to get feedback from you, the readers and viewers.

Look for more 40-yard dash features as the season progresses.

UW fall camp — Day 5

Wyoming had its first practice of fall camp in full pads Friday, and third-year coach Craig Bohl liked what he saw — especially from the offense.

Here’s what he said after practice.

If you listened to the entire video you heard Bohl talk about some “soft tissue” issues for UW senior wide receiver Tanner Gentry and sophomore free safety Andrew Wingard. Both have hamstring strains, as does junior cornerback Robert Priester. All three injuries don’t appear to be serious, but hamstrings can be tricky injuries to come back from. UW is being cautious with those three guys. While any kind of injuries are never good, at least through five days of camp UW hasn’t had to deal with any concussions or season-ending injuries.
